Prog Metal or Progressive Metal is another sub genre of metal music. Prog Metal Bands have some features from jazz and rock that are mixed into metal music. Powerful singing and guitar riffs from metal are still the main features. Progressive metal bands came up from jazz and classical music. Progressive metal uses these genres of music to build on and create a more complex sound. This small metal genre has less fans and popularity than other metal genres. With more bands entering in, it could find its way to the mainstream of the metal community. Where Progressive Metal Came From This metal genre traces back to the 1960's and 70's. High Tide was one of the first metal bands to start mixing some of these other elements into their metal music. Bands started to experiment with their music, Rush and King Crimson were some early bands to develop into progressive metal. But with these bands starting the new wave, there were three bands that took it to the next level. Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Queensryche all had their own ideas and inspiration for progressive metal These three bands really had some progressive rock influences that gave them a more edgy and extreme metal sound. Just Open the Door The start of the 1990's was a good breakout year for progressive metal. This was all because of Queensryche's Silent Lucidity, which became a huge hit in stores, on the radio and on MTV. And because of its wide popularity it increased other progressive bands to be exposed. Band like Symphony X, Ayreon, Tool, Opeth, Threshold and Pain of Salvation all started to come out and make a name for them. All these bands had their own unique style that made them a new popular progressive metal band. New Styles and Trends The future continue with the build of progressive metal. This metal genre needs some new leaders and new styles of music. For the present time we have Disillusion, Dark Suns and Conscience. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Green Carnation, Pain of Salvation, Anathema, Opeth and Tool. Classical, Jazz, Rock and Metal Needs some Progressive With some heavy metal, elements of rock, jazz and classical music will give you the building block of progressive metal. Progressive metal could be a parent to other metal genres. There is Progressive Death Metal, which bands like King's X and Opeth are most popular for. Devin Townsend, Shadown Gallery and Symphony X are some bands that can fit in traditional progressive metal. Meshuggah, Between the Buried and Me and Pestilence are known as jazz/fusion death metal. New Progressive Metal Bands With these new bands coming into progressive metal the structure and style of the music has evolved to more shred guitars and complex music. With time going forward this genre of music will continue to change with all the different music genres that started the music genre. These song structure, complex riffs and using more traditional instruments will continue to push this metal genre further into the future.
